Cecil Aquatic Center/Recreation Complex

The $25 million project was part of the 2000 Better Jacksonville Plan. The aquatic center facility, built for $5.7 million in 2004, has an Olympic-sized pool and a family/exercise pool. The heated indoor pools can be used year-round, but in the summer, large glass panels are opened for air circulation. The facility has hosted scores of high school swim meets since 2004. In addition to open swimming, lessons are available for children and adults. Infants and toddlers have their own programs, water babies and water tots, respectively. Water aerobics classes are utilized by many senior citizens and a youth swim team is sponsored during the summer.

Portofino Pools was originally retained as an aquatics consultant by the prime swimming pool builder during construction. We oversaw the final completion of the pools with heavy focus on the equipment installation and calibrations. At the completion of the pools we were retained to perform all “Start-up” services including water-quality management. When this term expired the City of Jacksonville awarded us a contract for complete Swimming Pool Operations: cleaning, maintenance, chemicals and water-quality services. After several years we trained in-house staff to perform these duties. These individuals attended Portofino University and at successful completion of a 16-hour live classroom course and written examinations they were officially recognized as Certified Pool Operators, CPO®
